Scoring Process

Scoring Guidelines/Process

1.The Tulsa Awards for Theatre Excellence committee has created an adjudication scoring system based on numbers.  Procedures for using these scoring scales for each category will be reviewed at the adjudicator training meetings at the beginning of each season.

2. On a “one to ten” scale (with ten being the highest), consider the “five” to be “average and what is expected,” and begin your judging from that point. Move up towards a “10” or down towards a “1” from that point.

Areas detailed on each ballot:

  •          · Direction
  •          · Script Selection/Writing
  •          · Acting/Ensemble/ Effectiveness
  •          · Stage Management
  •          · Costume design/ execution/ Effectiveness
  •          · Props design/ execution/ Effectiveness
  •          · Scenic design/ execution/ Effectiveness
  •          · Lighting design/ execution/ Effectiveness
  •          · Sound design/ execution/ Effectiveness
  •          · Blocking effectiveness
  •          · Marketing plan/ execution/ Effectiveness
  •          · Overall Production

3. A comment sheet is supplied with each ballot. Each adjudicator is asked to offer as much detail, positive and constructive, that lead to their final decision. These comment sheets are supplied to each organization upon request. These are not to be signed. They are intended to give constructive information on which to better each organization.

4.Each overall production and the individual elements of that production (performance, design, direction, etc.) should be adjudicated on their own value and merit and should not be compared to other productions by other theatre companies. However, you must be consistent in your personal standards when scoring from production to production. Remember, the adjudicator is evaluating both the individual production elements and the production as a whole. Does each of the elements serve the overall production?

5.Do not allow personal preferences or bias to influence your adjudication. If you feel you cannot be impartial, please contact the TATE Liaison immediately.
