Frequently Asked Questions

Why an awards program?

The Tulsa Awards for Theatre Excellence (TATE) was initiated to celebrate local theatre and to give Tulsa artists the financial resources to create excellent theatre and expand their audience.

Where does the award money come?

TATE is supported by the George Kaiser Family Foundation (GKFF) as part of their civic enhancement efforts.

When will the award winners be announced?

The TATE ceremony is tentatively planned for August 2009. Details will be announced in May 2009.

Why are musicals ineligible for awards?

The impetus for TATE was to provide support for straight theatre in the City of Tulsa. It is this form of theatre that is seen as needing the most support and recognition.

Why are educational institutions ineligible for awards?

Educational institutions have an inherent advantage over other nonprofit theatre organizations in that they receive institutional support for salaries and facilities. In addition, participants in university theatre have the advantage of full-time instruction in acting, directing, set design, etc.

Who are the judges?

The TATE committee feels that the judges should remain anonymous in order to avoid compromising the objectivity of the judging process.

How are judges selected?

TATE judges are selected from Tulsa and the surrounding communities based on their knowledge of theatre and a demonstrated commitment to the arts. The TATE committee makes a concerted effort to select individuals who can judge objectively and are relatively free of conflicts of interest.

How do I open the application?

The application is available in both Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat PDF format. If you do not have these programs you can download or purchase them online. You can download Adobe Reader at this web site. If you do not have Microsoft Word, you may also download Open Office, a FREE and Microsoft Word compatible program.

You may also pick up the application at the Arts and Humanities Council.

Why do I need to submit 4 copies of the application and marketing materials?

Four copies are needed so each judge can independently review all the materials for each production. One copy of the marketing materials is retained by the TATE Committee for its records.

What is meant by the term "marketing materials"?

Marketing materials may include any of the following: press release; press kit; brochures; posters; advertisements; CD or DVD of radio and television spots. Also, please include a brief paragraph describing your marketing and publicity plan.

On what criteria will our production be judged?

  • Writing or script selection
  • Acting
  • Stage management
  • Marketing
  • Program/Visual graphics
  • Scenic elements
  • Lighting
